Mind Unwind: A new program from Buddhist chaplains

Corrective Services chaplains continue to find innovative ways to support inmate wellbeing. At Long Bay Correctional Centre, Daniel Troyak and Anna Carmody have received approval from the Governor to pilot Mind Unwind, a four-week program tailored for elderly inmates and those requiring extra assistance.

Daniel says:

‘Our target group consists of elderly inmates, many of whom are long-term prisoners or individuals with age-related disabilities. They are often overlooked due to their slower mobility and the higher demands of other demographics within the prison system. However, since they are housed together in a dedicated unit, we saw an opportunity to better address their specific needs.’

Anna and Daniel drew on their combined experience of over 20 years in prison chaplaincy to develop the program. Their intention is to break the monotony of correctional life while promoting reflection, connection, and emotional growth.

Each session begins with a documentary screening and group discussion, fostering meaningful engagement and encouraging participants to reflect on their lives and experiences. This is followed by a short meditation, offering practical tools for stress reduction and improved mental health.

Inmates have already expressed excitement about the program, especially about the opportunity to learn from Anna Carmody, whose extensive experience in Tibetan Buddhism, the Dharma and meditation brings a unique depth to the sessions. Through Mind Unwind, participants are encouraged to observe and process their thoughts, leading to greater self-awareness, empathy, and a sense of connection—both to themselves and to others

Programs like Mind Unwind highlight the transformative role of Buddhist chaplaincy in corrections, providing inmates with opportunities for growth and wellbeing. As this initiative unfolds, it acts as a reminder that change and healing are always possible, even within the challenging context of a correctional centre.
