Location: Fowlers Gap Arid Zone Research Station, located about 110 km north of Broken Hill, near the NSW–SA border and on the edge of the Strzelecki Desert.
Fowlers Gap Research Station is owned by UNSW Sydney and operated as a research facility to study climate change, rangeland ecology, soil science, water scarcity and sustainable land management. The nearest town is Broken Hill.
Facilities: Comfortable, clean accommodation with attached bathrooms and showers; solar-powered air conditioning in all buildings.
Surroundings: Classic outback country marked by red earth and wide open skies, rocky ranges surrounded by saltbush plains, creek beds, kangaroos, emus, dingoes, wild goats, reptiles, and arid-zone birds.
Ambience: Profoundly isolated and aggressively soundless, yet when windy, it can be eerie and howling.
How to get to Broken Hill: Drive, Fly or Train* (*Trains run once a week between Sydney and Broken Hill. Departing Central Station on every Monday morning and Broken Hill on every Tuesday morning).
