The emergence of a Secular mode of Buddhist practice has witnessed a growing popularity in recent years. Stephen Batchelor’s books ‘Buddhism Without Beliefs’ and ‘Confessions of a Buddhist Atheist’ have been orchestral in the development of Secular Buddhism and subsequently has raised questions in respects to the place of Traditional Buddhism in a contemporary society. As western modes of Buddhist practice continue to be distinguished from their traditional counterparts, considerable attention, controversy and debate has ensued.
Bhante Sujato, Buddhist Scholar and Abbott of Santi Forest Monastery will be exploring the theme of the dialogue from a Traditional Buddhist perspective. He has not shied away from controversy himself and has actively sought the revival of full ordination of Buddhist Nuns (Bhikkhuni) within the Theravadin Tradition. He is pivotal in correlating both contemporary and historical analysis of Buddhist thought and has authored books such as ‘A History of Mindfulness’, ‘A Swift Pair of Messengers’ and recently ‘White Bones, Red Rot and Black Snakes’.
This evening will be an engaging opportunity to examine issues pertaining to rebirth, its implications and the applicability of Buddhist practice in the 21st Century. The depth of knowledge of both Bhante Sujato and Stephen Batchelor will make for a lively, informed and fascinating dialogue. Philosopher, Justine McGill will moderate the discussion for the evening.
